PRIVATE LICENCE
Our goal at National Helicopters is to help you achieve your dream of becoming a private helicopter pilot. Whether you intend to embark on an aviation career or simply fly for leisure, we can help you get started.
PREREQUISITES:
- An applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, or a person lawfully admitted to Canada for flight training.
- An applicant may commence flight training at any age, but must be 16 years of age prior to first solo and 17 years of age for the issue of a private licence - helicopter.
- Prior to first solo, an applicant must successfully complete a medical examination by a Transport Canada approved medical doctor.

GROUND SCHOOL
Ground school is held at our Bolton Heliport and Cornwall Flight Training Campus. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 1 pm until 4 pm on a rotating basis and are taught by qualified flight instructors. Students are welcome to join at any time. If a class is missed, you can make it up during the next round.
PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE - HELICOPTER:
PRIVILEGES:
The Holder of a Private Pilot Licence - Helicopter May Act as Pilot-in-Comand or Co-Pilot of a Helicopter For Which The Licence Is Endorsed.
VALID FOR:
4 years if holder is under 40.
2 years if holder is 40 or over.
KNOWLEDGE:
40 hrs of ground school
Pass 100 question multiple choice exam obtaining at least 60% in each of 4 subject areas as well as 60% in the overall exam.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 45 hrs total helicopter time; with Minimum 17 hrs dual flight time - including 5 hrs of instrument flight time and 3 hrs of cross-country flight time.
Minimum 12 hrs solo flight time - including 5 hrs of cross-country flight time with 1 cross-country flight of not less than 100 nautical miles and 2 full stop landings at points other than the point of departure.
SKILL:
Pass a flight test of approximately 1.5 hrs

KNOWLEDGE:
20 hrs of ground school
Pass 30 question multiple choice (CHRAC) exam by obtaining at least 60%.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 30 hrs total helicopter time; with minimum 17 hrs dual flight time - including 5 hrs of instrument flight time and 3 hrs of cross-country flight time.
Minimum 8 hrs solo flight time - including 3 hrs of cross-country flight time with 1 cross-country flight of not less than 100 nautical miles and 2 full stop landings at points other than the point of departure.
SKILL:
Pass a flight test of approximately 1.5 hrs
